TEHRAN, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Iran unveiled on Thursday a homemade defense missile system, Press TV reported.

The surface-to-air missile system, named Bavar-373, has been designed and manufactured by the Iranian experts, it said.

Bavar-373 was unveiled during a ceremony attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Defense Minister Amir Hatami and senior military officials on National Defense Industry Day.

It is a mobile defense system and is capable of intercepting and destroying hostile targets flying at altitudes of up to 65 kilometers.

The system employs missiles that have a maximum range of 300 kilometers.

It also detects up to 100 targets simultaneously and engages six targets at a time.

According to the report, Bavar-373 is a competitor to Russia's S-300 missile system and brings a few substantial upgrades over the Russian system.
