CHANGSHA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Vietnamese police have arrested 108 suspects for organizing cross-border online gambling involving more than 1 billion yuan (141.3 million U.S. dollars), Chinese authorities said Thursday.
At the beginning of this year, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security received a tip-off from the Chinese Embassy in Vietnam that a criminal gang comprised mainly of Chinese citizens were operating gambling websites in Vietnam and luring other Chinese citizens to participate in online gambling.
In April, the information was handed over to the public security bureau of central China's Hunan Province for further investigation, according to a press conference held by the bureau on Thursday.
The following police investigation showed that the gang set up online casinos in Vietnamese cities including Ha Long, Nha Trang and Da Nang, hired agents in Hunan Province and Vietnam and used social networking apps to lure more gamblers.
On June 6, Chinese police assisted Vietnamese police to launch raids in several places in Vietnam, capturing a total of 77 suspects. The Hunan police busted 31 suspects in the cities of Changsha, Yueyang and Changde on the same day.
The suspects arrested in Vietnam were transferred to Hunan on June 9.
