BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Huju opera film adaption of "Thunderstorm," a milestone in modern Chinese drama by renowned playwright Cao Yu (1910-1996), is set to hit Chinese mainland theaters on Aug. 27, according to the China Film Distribution and Exhibition Association.

A production of the Shanghai Huju Opera Theater, the film tells of the Zhou family's psychological and physical destruction as a result of incest and oppression, caused by its morally depraved and corrupt patriarch, Zhou Puyuan, a wealthy businessman.

Published in 1934 when Cao was only 24 years old, "Thunderstorm" was his first play. Many of Cao's plays, including "Thunderstorm," "Sunrise," "Wasteland," "Beijingers" and "Wang Zhaojun," have either been made into movies or translated into many other languages over the past decades.

Huju Opera is popular in east China's Shanghai Municipality and neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.
