BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's law-enforcing organs have stepped up efforts to help tackle water pollution in the country, according to a report submitted Friday to the national legislature for deliberation.

The report on the enforcement of the water pollution prevention and control law is under review at the ongoing bimonthly session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

In 2018, public security organs across the country solved a total of 14,000 criminal cases concerning water environment pollution with 18,000 suspects netted, according to the report.

Procuratorates nationwide approved the arrest of more than 15,000 people suspected of "crimes of impairing the protection of the environment and resources" in 2018 and prosecuted over 42,000 people for the crimes.

Also joining the efforts were Chinese courts, which set up 1,270 special tribunals for environment and resource cases.

Chinese lawmakers will deliberate the report in panel discussions on Saturday. A joint inquiry meeting on the report will also be held on Sunday.

The five-day legislative session will run until Monday.
