NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nick Kyrgios of Australia beat American Steve Johnson 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the opening round of the men's singles at the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

The Australian, seeded No. 28, hammered 54 winners to advance in two hours.

"My opponent is a hell of a player. If he'd got the second set, we'd probably still be playing now," said Kyrgios after the match. "I'm happy to get it done."

Kyrgios, who has won the Acapulco Open and Washington Open so far this year, will now face French wildcard Antoine Hoang, who scored his first win in New York by outlasting Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 3-6, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-3.
