BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chen Gang, a former member of the Leading Party Members Group of the China Association for Science and Technology, has been indicted on charge of taking bribes, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said Tuesday.

Chen Gang was charged with abusing his former positions as the chief of the urban planning authority and the vice mayor of Beijing to seek profits for others and accepting vast sums of money and gifts in return, according to the SPP statement.

Chen's case was handed over to the procuratorate of Nanjing in eastern China's Jiangsu Province for review and prosecution upon the designation of the SPP after the National Supervisory Commission concluded the investigation, it said.

Chen will stand trial in the Nanjing Municipal Intermediate People's Court, it added.

The SPP said the prosecutors had informed the defendant of his litigation rights, interrogated him and listened to the defense counsel's opinions.
