UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The top UN envoy for Afghanistan called for an end to violence after a Taliban-claimed attack in Kabul, a UN spokesman said Tuesday.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the UN Special Representative in Afghanistan and the head of the UN Mission in that country, Tadamichi Yamamoto, said the suffering of the Afghan people must end.

In a statement issued earlier this morning, Yamamoto said that violence across Afghanistan underscores the urgency of ending the conflict through a negotiated settlement.

"He also expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, all civilians, who once again suffered indescribable loss in violence," said the spokesman.

A tractor bomb was detonated near a compound frequented by foreigners in the eastern side of Afghanistan's capital of Kabul on Monday night. According to initial findings, the Taliban-claimed attack caused more than 100 civilian casualties, most of them wounded, Dujarric added.
