DAMASCUS, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The air defenses intercepted rebels' drone attack on a Russian-run base in Latakia province in northwestern Syria on Tuesday, state news agency SANA said.

The rebels in Idlib province in northwestern Syria are behind drones' attack on the Hmeimim air base, said the report.

Hmeimim air base has been the target of Syrian rebels' drones, which are usually flown from the nearby rebel-held Idlib province.

The legal status of the base is regulated by a treaty signed by Russia and Syria in August 2015.

At the end of 2017, Russia said that it had decided to turn the base into a component of its permanent military contingent stationed in Syria.

It is worth noting that the targeting of the air base comes in light of a cease-fire that went into force on Saturday in Idlib.
