BANGKOK, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sukhothai governor Maitree Traitilanan of Thailand on Wednesday affirmed that the Sukhothai Historical Park's ruins have been left unscathed by the recent tropical storm Podul and Kajiki.

Maitree said Sukhothai province in Northern Thailand was ravaged by two recent storms but the world heritage site was left unscathed, except for some mild flooding.

"Sukhothai Province is now able to handle the ongoing flood situation," said Maitree, "the Sukhothai Historical Park is still open and it is safe for tourists to visit."

Maitree said the overflowing Yom River has affected five districts - Muang, Kong Krailat, Khiri Mat, Si Samrong and Sawankalok.

Authorities have monitored the water level every half an hour and high pressure water pumps have been deployed to 10 flood-prone locations in the town's business areas, Maitree said.

The Sukhothai Historical Park, the Si Satchanalai Historical Park, the Ramkhamhaeng National Park and other natural attractions have not been affected by flooding, he said.

However Maitree said that the outer areas of Sukhothai are still hit hard by the flood.

"Last night the Yom River burst its banks and overflowed into several low-lying villages and some areas have been under two metres of water," said Maitree.

He said rescue workers have already evacuated the elderly and bedridden patients from their homes to safe places. Enditem
