SINGAPORE, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe's former leader Robert Mugabe has died here in Singapore, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said here Friday evening.

A MFA spokesperson said in response to media inquiry that his ministry "expresses its condolences on the passing of the former President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe this morning at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore."

The ministry is working with the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Singapore "on the arrangements for the late Mr Mugabe's body to be flown back to Zimbabwe," he added.

The Zimbabwean Embassy in Singapore told Xinhua that it would not be answering any media queries on Friday.

Mugabe's death was earlier announced by current Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his official Twitter account on Friday. "It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing of Zimbabwe's founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe," tweeted incumbent President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mugabe died at the age of 95. It is reported that Mugabe had been receiving treatment in the hospital in Singapore since April.
