MADRID, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Spain should take another step towards assuring their place in the finals of the European Championship on Sunday when they entertain the Faroe Islands in Gijon, northern Spain.
The Spanish will go into the match in the back of an impressive 2-1 win away to Romania on Thursday, which maintained their 100 percent winning record in qualifications.
The Faroe Islands travel to Spain after losing all of their games so far and shipping 16 goals in five matches, including a 4-1 home defeat to the Spanish back in June.
The game will serve as a homage to former Sporting Gijon player Enrique Castro Gonzalez, better known as Quini, who made 35 appearances for Spain and died last year at the age of 68.
It will probably also see some homage paid to former Spain coach Luis Enrique, whose nine year-old daughter Xana died of cancer less than a fortnight ago. Luis Enrique is from Gijon and began his career at Sporting Gijon where he is held in great affection.
Luis Enrique stepped down as Spain coach in June to help care for Xana and earlier this week Moreno said he would be happy to return to his former role as assistant if Enrique wished to return as coach.
In footballing terms, Moreno will make changes to the side which won in Romania with Diego Llorente suspended after being shown a direct red card in the second half. Mario Hermoso or uncapped Unai Nunez stand by and there is a chance both could start given that Spain are clear favorites.
Other changes could see Pablo Sarabia make his first start, while David de Gea could return in goal after Moreno favored Kepa Arrizabalaga on Thursday. Thiago Alcantara and Mikel Oyarzabal are also in with a good chance of starting in a match which allows Moreno to rotate his squad and have a look at fringe players, although with the emotion surrounding the game, Sunday could be more about remembering the past than looking to the future.
