Canada trounces Jordan 126-71 in FIBA World Cup classification round

SHANGHAI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Canada recorded a 126-71 victory over Jordan with 24 three-pointers here on Saturday in FIBA World Cup classification round.

The Group P game proved to be one-sided, as the Canadians posted a 13-0 run from the start. Sacramento Kings point guard Cory Joseph scored a three-pointer from the centre circle, ending the first quarter 31-13 for Canada.

With 14 three-pointers in hand, Canada killed the game 63-35 by halftime. In the second half, Canada had ten more three-pointers and once led by a 60-point margin.

"I am glad my players took a really professional approach. We tried to play tough defense as much as we can. Players show focus and real professionalism," said Canada coach Nick Nurse, also coach of Toronto Raptors.

Five Canadian players scored double-digit points to their victory, and Kyle Wiltjer had a game-high 29 points.

"Our main goal is to make the Olympics, and we have to get better every game, and we did it today," said Wiltjer.

"37 assists are great, and assisted baskets hold up a tournament-style play," Nurse commented on Canada's 37 assists.

Canada will take on Germany in the next match, while Jordan will face Senegal.

"We will try to win over Senegal for our first victory," said Jordanian coach Joseph Anthony Stiebing.
