GAZA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian militant, member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, was killed on Sunday in an explosion in central Gaza Strip, sources and medics said.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said in a short press statement that 24-year-old Mo'een al-Attar, who comes from the central Gaza Strip town of Deir al Balah, was killed on Sunday morning.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad said al-Attar was a member in the group's armed wing and was killed in an accidental explosion while trained at one of the military locations belonging to the group in central Gaza Strip, said sources.

According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, dozens of Palestinian militants were killed while they were carrying out military activities, mainly training with live ammunition.

Israeli war jets had carried out a series of airstrikes on Islamic Hamas movement's military facilities in northern and central Gaza Strip in response to a drone attack into Israel, causing no injuries.

Tension between Israel and the Hamas-led Gaza militant groups has been growing over the past few days since two teenagers were killed and 45 wounded by Israeli gunfire in eastern Gaza Strip near the border with Israel.
