BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Xinhua News Agency and Reuters have agreed to expand cooperation in areas including video and artificial intelligence (AI) application in media.

The agreement came as Xinhua President Cai Mingzhao met with President of Reuters News Michael Friedenberg at Xinhua's headquarters in Beijing Wednesday. They exchanged opinions over topics including expanding cooperation between the two agencies and the significance of technological advancement for media development.

While hailing Xinhua's cooperation with Reuters over the past six decades, Cai said Xinhua is willing to deepen friendly cooperation with Reuters and expand cooperation in areas such as photo, video and new media.

In face of profound changes in global media, journalists should not waver in upholding the basic principles of news reporting that call for getting the facts right and covering news facts in an objective and comprehensive way, no matter how media industry develops, Cai said.

Friedenberg said Reuters has over the years paid close attention to China's development, lauding Xinhua as a news agency "with eyes on tomorrow."

Reuters stands ready to expand strategic cooperation with Xinhua, and further enhance communication and cooperation in areas of new technology especially video and media AI application, Friedenberg added.

During his stay at Xinhua, Friedenberg visited Xinhua media innovation workshops, watched presentations about Media Brain, Live Cloud and Xinhua's AI anchor, and was briefed on Xinhua's systems of multimedia collection, editing and release as well as news contribution.
