RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will rest four more days after an abdominal surgery, presidential spokesperson Otavio Rego Barros said on Thursday.

Bolsonaro was to return to work on Friday, but the medical team decided to give him "more time to rest" after his hernia surgery earlier this week, Rego Barros said.

Bolsonaro was stabbed in September 2018 at a campaign rally and had abdominal wounds. He had to undergo a colostomy surgery and, in January 2019, a colostomy reversal surgery. Months later, doctors discovered a hernia and he had to undergo another surgical procedure.

The Brazilian leader was admitted to the hospital for the surgery on Sunday.

Despite the delay in the president's recovery, he is still expected to attend the UN General Assembly, where the Brazilian president is traditionally in charge of making the opening speech.
