TRIPOLI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Friday said it destroyed military convoys of the UN-backed government near the city of Sirte, some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli, and near Jufra District, some 650 km east of Tripoli.

Fighter jets of the army destroyed a convoy of 19 military vehicles near Sirte, preparing to launch attacks, the army's information office said in a statement.

The fighters also destroyed another convoy of 15 military vehicles near Jufra, the statement added.

The UN-backed government has not issued any statement regarding the attacks so far.

The UN-backed government has been engaged in a deadly armed conflict in and around Tripoli since early April against the eastern-based army, which is trying to take over the city and overthrow the UN-backed government.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of the former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
