Indian Railways will undertake a drive of "voluntary work" with the focus on the "collection of plastic waste," creating awareness among people for a greater impact against single-use plastic.
NEW DELHI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indian Railways will undertake a drive of "voluntary work" with the focus on the "collection of plastic waste" on Tuesday, an official statement stated on Sunday.
This "voluntary work" will be for enhanced cleanliness through a collection of plastic waste from all the railway premises. It will be also for creating awareness among people for a greater impact against single-use plastic.
According to the statement, the idea is to educate all in the Railways, including vendors, to be prepared for the ban of single-use plastic with effect from October 2.
Single-use plastic means usage of any plastic below 50 microns, in any manner.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech had asked people to eliminate single-use plastic from the country starting from October 2, which is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The state-owned Indian Railways is one of the world's largest train networks.
