KAMPALA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Six people died in a Tuesday afternoon road accident in the eastern Ugandan district of Namutumba after the driver of the commuter taxi they were traveling in lost control of the car.

James Mubi, police spokesperson for Busoga East, told Xinhua by telephone that two people died on spot while the other four died at a nearby health center where they were taken for medical care.

Mubi said preliminary investigations show that the cause of the accident was overspeeding.

He said one of the tires of the commuter taxi burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle before it rolled several times.

Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest traffic death rates, according to police statistics.

Police attribute the high rates of road accidents to reckless driving, overspeeding, human error, drink driving and overloading. Enditem
