TUNIS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia's Islamist party "Ennahdha" (Renaissance), the majority in the parliament, announced Tuesday its support for the independent candidate Kais Saied in the second round of presidential election.

During an emergency meeting at Ennahdha's headquarters, the party's leader Rached Ghanouchi released a statement, calling for his supporters to vote for Saied.

With the announcement, the number of parties and coalitions that confirmed their support for Saied rose to six.

Ennahdha's statement called for work to "create an atmosphere of equal opportunity" among the candidates in the second round of the presidential election, referring to the second candidate, Nabil Karoui, leader of Heart of Tunisia party.

Saied, a law professor, led the first round of Tunisia's presidential election with 18.4 percent of the votes, followed by Karoui with 15.58 percent of the votes, according to the results released by the Independent High Authority for Elections.

Another candidate Abdelfattah Mourou, incumbent interim speaker of the parliament, ranked third with 12.88 percent of the votes.
