ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Friday hit Yemen's southern port city of Aden, affecting many civilian houses.

The Meteorological Department at Aden's International Airport said that "it's expected that the tropical storm Hikaa will leave an impact on Aden through heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms starting from Friday and may continue for several days."

Flooding caused by the heavy rainfall badly affected people's properties in many neighborhoods of Aden, according to local residents.

"Several old houses in Aden including mine are badly affected and water overwhelmed all the rooms. We can't sleep tonight," said Fatah Ali, an Aden-based resident.

The Southern Transitional Council (STC) controlling Aden and other neighboring provinces established an emergency operations center to deal with the effects caused by the rains.

Nizar Haitham, the STC's official spokesman, said that "a number of teams linked to the relief committee are working on-ground and following up the damage that occurred in Aden."

Many main streets of Aden were overwhelmed with flooding which restricted the residents' movement.

Power outages were reported in some neighborhoods of Aden as a result of the strong winds and rainfall.

In June, at least three people died in Yemen following heavy rains and flooding that struck several parts of the country's southern and eastern provinces.

Yemen has been locked in a civil war since the Shiite Houthi rebels overran much of the country militarily and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014.

Saudi Arabia has been leading an Arab military coalition that intervened in Yemen's conflict in 2015 to support the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi after Houthi rebels forced him into exile.

The prolonged military conflict has aggravated the suffering of Yemenis and deepened the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
