TIANJIN, China, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinses qualifier Wang Yafan defeated defending champion Caroline Garcia to reach the WTA Tianjin Open quarterfinals.
Wang, who reached so far at Tianjin Open for the first time, broke at 4-4 and wrapped up the first set 6-4. The 25-years-old built up a large lead of 5-1 and sealed the victory 6-2 with an ace.
"I think she struggled with her serves the whole match. I didn't think too much about the results. I just did my best to fight for every point," Wang said.
"She played an excellent game today, I tried to find my own rhythm but failed," said Garcia.
Up next for Wang is Rebecca Peterson from Sweden, who dismissed Wang Xinyu of China 7-5, 3-2 when the Chinese retired.
Another big name knocked out is Australia's Samantha Stosur, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, who was beaten by No. 6 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-1, 6-2.
In another match on Wednesday, Chinese qualifier Wang Xiyu was taken down by Tunisia's Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-2.
