UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council will meet on Thursday morning on Syria after Turkey launched a military operation in northern Syria.

"I'm trying to schedule a meeting tomorrow morning on Syria," South Africa's UN ambassador Jerry Matjila, who holds the Security Council presidency for the month of October, told reporters on Wednesday.

He said the meeting could either be consultations behind closed doors or an open briefing at the Security Council chamber.

"We are going through this process (of preparation) right now because I have just received correspondence from some members of the Security Council to say they need a meeting," said Matjila.

Diplomats said the meeting on Syria was requested by the five EU members on the Security Council: Belgium, Britain, France, Germany and Poland.

The meeting was requested after Turkey launched a military offensive in northern Syria following a U.S. withdrawal from the region, where Kurdish fighters had been fighting Islamic State terrorist militants alongside U.S. troops. The U.S. withdrawal put the Kurdish fighters at the mercy of Turkish troops.
