LAGOS, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- A building collapse in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub has recorded four deaths and at least six injured, according to the emergency management agency.

Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the general manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency told media on Sunday that the incident happened on Satruday as a result of heavy rainfall in the area.

A woman and her three children perished in the collapsed building while her husband survived, Oke-Osanyintolu said.

"A building on top of a hill collapsed on buildings that were down the hill," said Oke-Osanyintolu, adding unconfirmed number of people were trapped inside the buildings and the rescue work is still ongoing.

The injured persons were taken to hospital while the dead bodies were deposited in a morgue, he said.

Building collapses often occur in Nigeria as some property owners and developers do not adhere strictly to planning and building laws and regulations, according to local experts.

In most cases, heavy loads are placed on the building and substandard materials are often used in the construction work.

In March, at least 12 pupils of a primary school were confirmed dead following the collapse of a building which housed their school in Lagos.
