Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Fenerbahce 67-55 in Euroleague basketball

JERUSALEM, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Israeli basketball champions Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Turkey's Fenerbahce 67-55 in the fifth round of the Euroleague on Wednesday.

The Israeli hosts achieved their third victory so far, while Fenerbahce remained with only one win in five games.

11,000 fans at the Menorah Mivtachim Arena in the coastal city of Tel Aviv saw a low score first quarter, which ended with a 12-6 lead for the home team that showed strong defence.

Israeli former NBA player Omri Casspi lifted Maccabi to an impressive second quarter, en route to a 41-21 halftime lead.

Then, the Turks improved their offensive game, and along with points and rebounds from power forward Derrick Williams the deficit was cut to 41-52 at the end of the third quarter.

The margin continued to drop, 54-59 in the fourth quarter, but Tarik Black and Yovel Zoosman scored important points to secure the home victory.

Caaspi scored a team-high 13 points while Othello Hunter and Nate Wolters added 11 points each. Black logged 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Nando de Colo led Fenerbahce's scorers with 13 points. His teammates Ali Muhammed and Williams added 11 points each.

Maccabi will play their next game in Greece against Olympiacos Piraeus, while Fenerbahce will host Zalgiris Kaunas - with both games to be played on November 1.
