MOGADISHU, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States military said it killed an al-Shabab militant in an airstrike in southern Somalia on Tuesday.

The airstrike was carried out in collaboration with the Somali government in the vicinity of Jilib, which is the militants' stronghold, and did not injure or kill any civilians, the U.S. Africa Command said in a statement late Tuesday.

"It is assessed the airstrike killed one terrorist," the statement said. "The individual targeted had direct ties to the al-Qaida terror organization."

U.S. forces, in cooperation with the Somali government and African Union peacekeeping mission, are conducting operations against al-Shabab in Somalia to degrade the al-Qaida affiliate's ability to recruit, train and plot terror attacks.
