TEHRAN, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian authorities closed kindergartens and primary schools on Wednesday over serious air pollution in Iran's capital Tehran, Eghtesad Online news website reported.

The announcement was made by Tehran's Governor Anoushirvan Mohseni-Bandpay, according to the report.

The density of toxic pollutants has been steadily increasing since late October, reaching levels considered dangerous for the vulnerable.

To encourage private vehicle users to switch to public transport, bus and subway fares in Tehran have been slashed by half until further notice, Mohammad Taqizadeh, head of Air Pollution Emergency Committee, was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, charges paid by cars entering the zone demarcated by the Air Pollution Control scheme have been increased by 50 percent in order to reduce traffic in the central parts of the capital, Taqizadeh added.

Authorities have urged Tehran's residents to avoid outdoor physical exercises.
