JERUSALEM, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Israeli military said Palestinian militants in Gaza Strip fired a rocket at southern Israel on Thursday evening, despite a truce achieved earlier after three days of deadly clashes.

An Israeli military spokesman said in a statement that Israel's Iron Dome air defense system intercepted the rocket before it hit the ground.

The rocket triggered sirens in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip, where residents had been ordered to stay close to shelters and bomb-proof rooms since the escalation began on Tuesday.

In the morning, hours after the cease-fire came into effect, Gaza militants fired five rockets at Israel. Two of them were intercepted and there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli military and Islamic Jihad announced that an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire deal was reached, ending three days of cross-border fire that claimed the lives of 34 Palestinians.

The violence was sparked by the killing of Islamic Jihad's senior commander Baha Abu al-Atta by Israeli airstrikes, which targeted his home in Gaza city and killed him and his wife on Tuesday.

In retaliation, Islamic Jihad militants fired at least 450 rockets Israel.
