TEHRAN, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian Navy on Thursday inaugurated its new headquarters in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on the shores of the Gulf.
Speaking at the ceremony, Iranian Navy Commander Hossein Khanzadi said the Navy moved its headquarters from the capital Tehran to Bandar Abbas under the guidance of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, "so that the force would be closer to operational zones," the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
Khanzadi said this transfer would increase the speed of naval operations and "will allow the Navy to have more focus on waters."
He added that the move would have various cultural, social, and economic effects on the region in Hormozgan Province.
The Iranian Navy has in recent years, along with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps' naval forces, strengthened its capabilities with different home-made weapons, the Fars report said.
