MANILA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Stephan Schrock's lone goal helped the Philippines U-22 men's Olympic football team beat Malaysia at 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games football tournament group stage here on Friday.

In the must-win match against 2017 SEA Games silver medalists Malaysia, the hosts took the game from the beginning and their pressure was duly rewarded with captain Schrock's game-winning goal.

Schrock floated in a corner that swerved in the 72nd minutes and crept into the back of the net directly.

Malaysia pressed for the equalizer, missing a golden opportunity from Haddi Fayyadh in late minutes.

The win comes 28 years after the Filipinos shocked Malaysia at the same venue with the same scoreline.

After the fresh victory, the Philippines bounced back to the third place in Group A with one win, one draw and one defeat. While Malaysia stays the second from bottom with a single point.

Only the champion and runner-up in each group will qualify for the semifinals.

The hosts will continue their SEA Games campaign against Timor-Leste, its last opponent in the group stage on Wednesday.

On the same day, Myanmar beat Timor-Leste with 3-1 in to climb atop of the group.

Cambodia, which drew a bye on that day, is also in Group A.

Group B is composed of Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Vietnam, and three-time defending champion Thailand.

Rules permit all the 11 competing teams to field two players older than 22.
