TEHRAN, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Hossein Baqeri and visiting Azeri Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev on Wednesday discussed the defense and security cooperation between the two countries, Tehran Times daily reported.

The two sides vowed to do their best to deepen the bilateral relations, especially in defense and security fields.

Baqeri said that "some of the regional and trans-regional players cannot tolerate friendly relations between Iran and Azerbaijan."

"Iran views close relations between the people and the armed forces of the two nations as its strategic priority," he was quoted as saying.

Iran is resolved to pave the ground for creation of more opportunities to promote Tehran-Baku ties, he stressed.

For his part, Mustafayev said that "Baqeri's point of views and stances have cemented brotherly relations between the two countries that share common history and culture."

In January, Baqeri visited Azerbaijan where he and Azeri Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov signed a memorandum of understanding to bolster defense cooperation between the two countries.
