BAGHDAD, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Three Kurdish security members were killed and two others wounded on Thursday in an attack by Islamic State (IS) militants in eastern Iraq, a security source said.

The attack took place early in the morning when IS militants attacked a military base for a Kurdish security force, known as Peshmerga, in Kaljo area on the provincial border between the provinces of Diyala and Sulaimaniyah, Alaa al-Saadi from Diyala's provincial police told Xinhua.

The attack on Kurdish security forces is the second within a week, as the extremist militants attacked last Saturday another military base for a Kurdish security forces, known as Asayish, in the same area, leaving three security members killed, including an officer, the source said.

The security situation in Iraq was dramatically improved after Iraqi security forces fully defeated the extremist IS militants across the country late in 2017.

However, IS remnants have since melted in urban areas or resorted to deserts and rugged areas, carrying out guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians despite military operations from time to time to hunt them down.
