Chinese shares close higher Friday

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.78 percent at 2,967.68 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.71 percent higher at 10,004.62 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 565.59 billion yuan (about 80.62 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 448.86 billion yuan in the previous trading day.

Winners outnumbered losers by 1,249 to 184 on the Shanghai bourse and by 1,795 to 321 on the Shenzhen bourse.

Shares of companies in the securities sector, ophthalmic medical treatment sector and airport sector posted strong performance, with shares of Nanjing Securities Co., ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Meanwhile, companies in tourist attractions, gold and semiconductor sectors led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2 percent to close at 1,755.41 points Friday.
