BANGKOK, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Royal Thai Police on Monday announced that it will enforce strict traffic rules to boost road safety during the coming New Year holiday.
Pol Col Krisana Patanacharoen, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police said this year they would focus on speed limits and those driving under alcoholic influences and driving under fatigue.
"We will have police deployed at all major roads before, during and after the New Year festival to prevent untoward incidents," said Pol Col Krisana.
"We expect the traffic to become very busy starting from Christmas day onwards, and the peak exodus from main cities will be on Dec. 27."
Pol Col Krisana also said that police will further intensify in crime suppressions including search warrants and conducting thorough scans at key areas.
Thai authorities are making a serious effort to reduce the number of road traffic accidents in Thailand.
Those caught drunk driving may face a hefty fine of 60,000 baht (1,984 U.S. dollars) and 6 months in prison, or both.
