ISLAMABAD, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- A special court in Pakistan on Tuesday handed death sentence to former President Pervez Musharraf on charges relating to the imposition of extra-constitutional emergency in November 2007, according to local media reports.

A three-member bench of the special court delivered a short verdict in the case in the absence of Musharraf, finding him guilty of abrogation of the constitution under the article 6 of the Pakistan's constitution among others, local media reported, adding that two judges were in favor of the death sentence while one was against it.

Musharraf is currently living in the United Arab Emirates and his lawyers say he is seriously sick.

The special court had issued notices to Musharraf to appear to record his statement, but he failed to return to the country.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said the government will review legal aspects of the judgment and Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to consult legal experts on Wednesday.
