KABUL, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan National Police had busted a terror group in the country's southern province of Kandahar, the Interior Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

"The ANP has busted a terrorist ring of Taliban outfit during a recent operation in Kandahar. A total of seven arrests were made during the raid in surrounding areas of Kandahar province," the ministry said in a statement.

"Two Taliban's improvised explosive device (IED) making experts and two militants involved in targeted killings were among the arrestees. Another three captives were involved in series of major attacks on security forces in Kandahar," the statement added.

The statement added that the timely arrest of the men has foiled major terror attacks and saved the province, some 450 km south of Kabul, from expected tragedy.

Security situation has been improving in Kandahar, the former stronghold of Taliban, over the past months, as security forces have conducted search and cordon operations across the province. But the militants attack government interests in the province from time to time.
