DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's anti-drugs watchdog said on Thursday the east African country's commercial capital Dar es Salaam and southern region of Mtwara were leading as conduits for drug trafficking.

James Kaji, the Commissioner General of the Drugs Control and Enforcement Authority, said Tanga region on the Indian Ocean coastline ranked third as a conduit for drug trafficking.

"Almost all regions remain as key points for drug trafficking but Mtwara has become a key conduit for drugs trafficked mainly from Mozambique followed by Dar es Salaam and Tanga," Kaji told a news conference in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

The official said Mtwara region has become the leading entry point for drugs, including heroin and cocaine.

Kaji said all the three regions have the country's major ports on the Indian Ocean, handling volumes of both local and international cargo.

Kaji named regions of Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Morogoro as leading places in growing marijuana also known as cannabis, a psychoactive drug from the cannabis plant used for medical or recreational purposes.
