CAIRO, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's Military Sports Authority signed on Thursday a contract with the International Military Sports Council (CISM) to host the military world football cup in 2021, the Egyptian military said in a statement.

"It is the first new version of the military world football to be held in Africa," said Tamer al-Refai, the Egyptian military spokesman.

The Egyptian military and its sports authority vowed distinguished organization of the event.

The new version of the military world football competition, named CISM World Football Cup, was first held in 2013 in Azerbaijan's capital Baku and won by Iraq. The second one was held in 2017 in Oman's capital Muscat and won by Oman, while Egypt ranked fourth.

The 2021 competition in Egypt will consist of 16 teams: four from Africa, four from Asia, four from Europe and four from the Americas.

The old version of the tournament started in 1946 and was won by England. The most successful military national football teams include Italy, with eight championship titles, Greece, with six titles, and Egypt and France, with five titles each.
