UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- About 80 percent of the Yemenis are in need of life-saving support, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said Monday.
"The humanitarian operation in Yemen remains the largest in the world, with 24 million people - about 80 percent of the population - in need of life-saving support," said Dujarric at the daily news briefing.
"About 7.4 million people need nutrition assistance, including 2.1 million children under the age of five, and 1.1 million pregnant and breastfeeding women who need acute malnutrition treatment," he said.
"As of January 8th, almost 861,000 suspected cholera cases had been reported since 2019, impacting 324 of Yemen's 333 districts," said the spokesman.
"Some 3.6 million people are internally displaced, with nearly 400,000 newly displaced in 2019 alone," Dujarric added.
The Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to extend, for six months, the mandate of the UN mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels.
Resolution 2505, which won the unanimous support of the 15 members of the Council, extends the mandate of the UN mission in Yemen till July 15, 2020.
