BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.54 percent at 3,090.04 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.15 percent lower at 10,972.32 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 611.07 billion yuan (about 88.76 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 701.94 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,055 to 386 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,428 to 710 in Shenzhen.
Stocks related to the communication services led the gains, with shares of Xinhua Net Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 32.32 yuan per share.
Shares in the agriculture sector led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.09 percent to close at 1,924.24 points.
