5.6-magnitude earthquake hits Xinjiang, no casualties reported

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Kuqa city of Aksu Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 4:32 p.m. Thursday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

No casualties were reported as the epicenter was located in a depopulated area, said the local publicity department.

No houses were reported to be damaged or collapsed during the earthquake with the epicenter 78 km away from the city's downtown area.

The epicenter was monitored at 41.21 degrees north latitude and 83.6 degrees east longitude. The quake struck at a depth of 16 km, the center said in a statement.
