ANKARA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A political process for resolving the Libyan crisis is possible only if the current truce in the country holds, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.
"The political process will be opened if warring parties comply with the truce that we made a call with Putin," the president told reporters accompanying him on the route from Germany to Turkey, the daily Hurriyet reported.
Erdogan attended an international meeting in Berlin aiming at reach a resolution on Libyan crisis. Turkey and Russia brokered a truce in Libya followed by the Berlin conference to maintain a permanent ceasefire in the war-torn country.
The Turkish president noted that the Berlin conference yielded a decision to establish a military committee in the coming few days with the participation of five members from the warring sides in Libya, namely the Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar, and the Tripoli-based UN-recognized government headed by Fayez al-Serraj.
Erdogan underlined that the most important factor in the way of resuming political process is Haftar's "aggressive attitude."
Turkey supported the UN-backed Government of National Accord and the Turkish parliament has authorized the government to send troops to Libya after signing a military and security deal with Serraj.
Ankara already dispatched some troops to the war-torn country.
"The fact is that the steps we have taken regarding Libya have brought a balance to the process and a cease-fire ground has been established," Erdogan said.
"We will continue to support the political process by keeping our position strong both on the field and at the table. Turkey's presence in Libya has increased the hope for peace," he added.
