UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday welcomed the formation of a new Lebanese government, said his spokesman.

The secretary-general looks forward to working with new Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab and his incoming cabinet, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, in a statement.

The world body will support Lebanon's reform agenda and its efforts to address the pressing needs of its people, said the statement.

Guterres reiterated the United Nations' commitment to supporting Lebanon's strengthening of its sovereignty, stability and political independence, and its effective implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions, which remain essential to the stability of Lebanon and the region, it said.

Lebanon has been mire in political chaos since October 2019 following protests triggered by planned taxes on gas, tobacco and online phone calls. Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri resigned in late October. A new government led by Diab was announced on Tuesday.

Guterres had repeatedly voiced concern over the violent clashes between protesters and the security forces of Lebanon.
