Unemployment rate in Taiwan rises slightly in 2019

TAIPEI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's unemployment rate rose by 0.02 percentage points from 2018 to 3.73 percent in 2019, according to the island's statistical agency Wednesday.

College graduates saw an unemployment rate of 5.3 percent in 2019, the highest among all groups across all educational backgrounds, the agency said in a press release.

Across all age groups, people aged between 20 and 24 reported the highest unemployment rate of 12.27 percent in 2019. They were followed by people aged between 15 and 19, for whom the unemployment rate stood at 9.22 percent.

A total of 446,000 people were registered as unemployed across Taiwan in 2019 on average, about 6,000 more than in 2018, a rise of 1.22 percent.

The island's unemployment rate in December dropped by 0.06 percentage points to 3.67 percent from November. A total of 439,000 people were registered as unemployed across Taiwan in December, about 8,000 fewer than the previous month, a drop of 1.78 percent.
