JERUSALEM, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday agreed to convene a "strategic dialogue" over regional issues, said the prime minister's office.
The two leaders held a breakfast meeting at the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, as Macron arrived in Israel to take part in the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp on Thursday.
No joint statements were made after the meeting, but the Israeli prime minister's office said the meeting was "warm and friendly."
"We have agreed to establish a strategic dialogue between Israel and France to allow us to continue to cooperate over our common interests," Netanyahu said in a video statement.
"It can help us for things that are very important for the security of the country," he added.
The two also discussed Iran-related tensions. Netanyahu, a vocal opponent of the 2015 nuclear deal, urged Macron to follow the United State and impose sanctions on Iran.
Macron arrived at the Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv on Tuesday night for a two-day visit.
