BEIRUT, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 52 people were injured on Wednesday evening in heavy clashes between hundreds of protesters and security forces in downtown Beirut, LBCI TV channel reported.

Georges Kettaneh, secretary general of the Lebanese Red Cross, said 12 of the injured were sent to hospitals while 40 others treated on the ground.

Meanwhile, security forces issued a statement that urges protesters to stop throwing stones that caused serious injuries to soldiers and calls on peaceful protesters to stay away from violent clashes.

Clashes resumed on Wednesday evening with protesters voicing their disapproval of the new cabinet which held its first meeting earlier in the day.

The new cabinet was formed on Tuesday with 20 ministers supported by the two Shiite political parties, Hezbollah and Amal Movement.

Nationwide protests have been continuing in Lebanon since Oct. 17, 2019.
