RABAT, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan King Mohammed VI on Wednesday sent a message of condolence to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi over the death of former Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak.

In his message, Mohammed VI said he learned with great sadness of the passing away of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The king recalled Mubarak's devotion to the supreme interests of his country and the strong ties of friendship and high esteem he maintained with Morocco, as well as his commitment and determination to defend Arab and Islamic causes.

Mubarak, who died at the age of 91, had served as Egyptian president for nearly 30 years until he resigned as a result of mass protests that erupted in the country in 2011.

He was jailed for years on charges of corruption and killing protesters, but was freed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges.
