Over 258 tons of illegal timbers seized in Myanmar

YANGON, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities confiscated over 258 tons of illegal timbers across Myanmar in a week, according to the Forest Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation on Thursday.

The seizures were made in the country's regions, states and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory on Sept. 14-20.

The seized illegal timbers include 134.8 tons of teak, 34.6 tons of hardwood and 88.7 tons of other types of timbers, the release said.

During the period, 49 offenders were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of 38 vehicles and machinery.

Meanwhile, the forest department has been making efforts to crack down on illegal logging and trading of forest products as well as to implement tree plantation projects in substitution. Enditem
