JERUSALEM, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- A two-day closure was imposed by Israel on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Sunday ahead of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the Israeli army said.

The closure started early Sunday morning and will continue until Monday midnight, a military spokesperson confirmed to Xinhua.

As part of the closure, all the checkpoints in the West Bank and Gaza will be closed and Palestinians will not be allowed to exit or enter the territories "except for humanitarian cases," according to a statement issued by the army.

The measure is taken "following a security assessment and an instruction by the political echelon," the statement said.

The closure will not be imposed on Israelis in the West Bank settlements.

Israel imposes closures on the occupied territories during most of the Jewish holidays, citing Palestinian militants might use the holiday to carry out an attack.

The measure was imposed as both Israelis and Palestinians were struggling to halt a rapid resurgence of the coronavirus infections. Enditem
