DHAKA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's trade deficit narrowed about 66 percent to nearly 700 million U.S. dollars in the first two months of the current 2020-21 fiscal year (July 2020- June 2021), official statistics showed recently.

According to statistics of the central bank of Bangladesh, the country exported 6.73 billion U.S. dollars worth of goods while imported items worth 7.43 billion U.S. dollars in the July-August period of the current fiscal year.

The overall trade deficit in the same period of last fiscal year was 2.05 billion U.S. dollars when Bangladesh's export earning and import payment stood at about 6,577 million U.S. dollars and 8,627 million U.S. dollars respectively, the Bangladesh Bank data showed.

In the first two months of the current fiscal year, however, Bangladesh's export earnings rose by 2.39 percent while imports fell 13.85 percent compared with a year earlier.

As the growth in exports significantly outpaced the imports which took the heaviest hit due to COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh's trade deficit in July-August virtually shrank largely, said a BB official who preferred to be unnamed told Xinhua earlier. Enditem
