India defense ministry approves equipment acquisitions

NEW DELHI, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- India's Defense Ministry on Monday approved proposals for acquisitions of various equipment required by the armed forces at an approximate cost of 2290 crore Indian Rupees (about 305 million U.S. dollars), said an official statement.

The equipment is to be procured from domestic industry as well as foreign vendors.

To equip the frontline troops of the Indian Army, the defense ministry's Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) also gave approval for procurement of the "Sig Sauer" assault rifles from the United States at a cost of approximately 780 crore Indian Rupees (about 104 million U.S. dollars).

The decision to acquire new defense equipment was taken at a DAC meeting held under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday.

Under the Buy Indian (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured, or IDDM) category, the DAC approved procurement of static HF tans-receiver sets and smart anti airfield weapon (SAAW).

The HF radio sets will enable seamless communication for the field units of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF) and are being procured at an approximate cost of 540 crore Indian Rupees (about 72 million U.S. dollars).

The smart anti airfield weapon would be procured at an approximate cost of 970 crore Indian Rupees (about 129 million U.S. dollars) and will be added to the fire power of the Indian Navy and the IAF. Enditem
